What codec do you need for windows movie maker?

This is what happens:
The file “blafsahlwejf” cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

I don’t know what codec to install. I googled it and it brings me a website but there is like a hundred downloads!

    What is the actual file name extension? ‘Cause that is not a file format. To see what the file name extension (format) is, right-click on the file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. Is it one of these listed below:

    .asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv

    If it isn’t, you will need to convert the file before it can be imported into Windows Movie Maker.
