I’m setting up a system that needs to encode video on the fly, but ideally have a minimum of heat output. Are AMDs or Intels going to be (generally) better suited to my task?

As much as I hate to say it (I’m quite an AMD fan) I would have to choose intel over AMD in this case. AMD’s big weakness has always been, and still is, video encoding. AMD processor’s simply aren’t able to do it as efficiently as Intel processors.

Intel Penryn and Nehalem CPUs are cool and powerful, as well as AMD Phemon and X2 CPUs. I’ve heard more about Intel being more efficient, although that may not be the case.
